Digital Media and Psychiatric Services
Leading edge care for the digitally dependent
“We’re going beyond simple pharmaceutical management to see the patient as an integrated and whole individual”
We are pleased to formally introduce the naturopathic psychiatry services available at reSTART Life, PLLC. With over 10 years of experience specializing in technology dependency and internet gaming disorder (IGD), it became clear that greater and more efficient outcomes consistently occur when our clients tackle mental health from every angle. Both screening for, and properly treating common physical health concerns and deficiencies for our distinct population provides the support they need to maximize their time with us. To this end, we now formally integrate naturopathic psychiatry into our program.
This offering is restricted to naturopathic psychiatry, also known as integrative psychiatry, and is performed by our onsite naturopathic physician (ND) who has extensive experience and training in technology dependency and mental health. Select urgent care services on an as-needed basis for our inpatient population are also available. It is important to note that services such as the well-child exam and TB testing will NOT be conducted by the onsite naturopathic doctor due to the limitations of the facility.
Our evidence-based integrative care helps you get back on track with what matters most – life.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is naturopathic medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct health care profession, emphasizing prevention, treatment, and optimal health. This is achieved through the use of therapeutic methods and substances that encourage individuals’ inherent self-healing processes. The practice of naturopathic medicine includes modern and traditional, scientific, evidence-based, and empirical methods.
Examples of treatment modalities include but are not limited to pharmaceutical medicine, herbal medicine, nutraceuticals, hydrotherapy, nutrition, counseling, biofeedback, physical medicine, and sports medicine. These methods will be used, or not, as indicated for each individual client.
In Washington state, naturopathic physicians possess full prescriptive rights. The exception to this is with the prescription of controlled substances, such as Adderall and Vyvanse.
Naturopathic physicians are recognized as doctors within the community that have completed a four year post-baccalaureate naturopathic medical school with a heavy grounding in the sciences and primarily serve in primary care settings.
What is Naturopathic Psychiatry?
Naturopathic, or integrative, psychiatry is a holistic approach that uses both conventional and adjunctive therapies in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Personalized treatments are developed to suit each person’s lifestyle and strengthen self-awareness and resources for self-care.
A comprehensive analysis is employed, taking into consideration the patient’s entire health system, and appropriate treatments are determined from there accordingly. For example, a genetic tendency for depression may require pharmaceutical intervention and support whereas a transient situational trigger may benefit more from talk therapy. Nutrition, counseling, pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and sports medicines are the most common treatment methods used. At reSTART, treatment recommendations may include any of the standard modalities mentioned above or more, depending on patient presentation.
If a patient who is currently, wishes to begin taking, or is believed to be in need of a controlled drug (e.g. Adderall, Vyvanse) for their condition, they will be referred out to a psychiatrist in the community who can manage their controlled medications. We work with several psychiatrists in the area who are familiar with our program and what we do.
Any patient who is currently taking a controlled substance will be pharmaceutically managed entirely by an outside psychiatrist. The naturopathic doctor (ND) will provide adjunctive psychiatric care in this case.
Patients who are not currently taking a controlled substance will have a choice of either being pharmaceutically managed by the onsite naturopathic doctor OR by a community psychiatrist. As such, the naturopathic psychiatrist will provide either primary or adjunctive psychiatric care depending on the needs and desires of the patient. Blood draws, genetic testing, and other common diagnostic procedures may also be done on-site.
Why Naturoapthic Psychiatry?
In order to keep with reSTART’s whole person approach to recovery, the integration of all aspects of an individual’s healthcare is essential.
To this end, reSTART uses in-house naturopathic psychiatry as the primary method to address the physical components of mental health. Our onsite naturopathic psychiatrist has extensive experience with individuals suffering from technology dependency issues. This integrative option links a patient’s physical health conditions with their effects on mental health, going above and beyond simple pharmaceutical management to address the individual’s entire system and needs.
As a simplistic but illustrative example of this, consider a patient presenting with severe anxiety. Instead of simply prescribing an anti-anxiety medication and then being done with their role, the naturopathic psychiatrist would prescribe the medication while also working with the team to draw upon counseling resources and apply nutrition and exercise principles to help ensure blood sugar regulation throughout the day. “Spikes” and “crashes” of blood sugar can often contribute, or even create, a picture of heightened anxiety. This more complete, holistic approach may then reduce or eliminate the need for the medication while improving overall health and wellness at the same time.
The ability to not only offer, but truly tailor, nutrition, pharmacology, sports medicine, mindfulness therapies and more to the individual patient is what fundamentally differentiates the program and its results. We have found this to be substantially helpful with outcomes even when the naturopathic doctor is acting in a purely adjunctive psychiatric role. With adjunctive psychiatric care, underlying physical health concerns can be uncovered and properly treated from a mental health perspective.
What is the additional cost of these services?
If integrative psychiatric services are desired, the first visit costs $350 with all subsequent visits being $200. Visits typically vary in length from 15 minutes to one hour depending on individual needs, with the initial visit typically being one hour in duration. Diagnosis and CPT codes are available after each visit so that individuals can submit for any reimbursements themselves.
reSTART does not bill insurance for services rendered.
Health insurance can however, be used for any labs or imaging ordered since diagnostic companies are separate business entities from reSTART Life.
Usually, the first visit or two are more ‘information-gathering’ visits in order to put together a thorough initial assessment, screen for common issues, order labs to aid the diagnostic and treatment picture, establish care and relationship with the patient, and to determine an appropriate path forward. In our experience, a measured, individualized, methodical, and evidenced-based approach often yields the fastest and most efficient results in both mental health and technology dependency in particular.
Age of consent?
We’d like to emphasize that in Washington State medical decision making for psychiatric care is 13 years of age. As such, we cannot force a patient to take psychiatric medication or see a psychiatrist (MD, ARNP, or ND) while they are with us. Ideally, they will be willing to explore these treatment options on their own when warranted. We always let patients know their full range of options when we talk to them. “Jumping the gun” and trying to force a patient into psychiatric treatment before it’s even clinically indicated could be ultimately harmful and increase resistance.
